An F-1 student visa is a non-immigrant visa that allows international students to enter the US and study at schools approved by the Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP). It is the most common type of student visa for those wanting to study at a US university or college. You can only apply for F-1 visa after a recognized US school accepts your application.

US Department of state Form DS-16

As an F-1 student, the length of your stay in the US depends on your study program. The university you plan to attend will give you a form called the I-20, which shows the end date of your program. You must complete your degree by this date, which also indicates how long you can stay in the US.

If you want to apply for an F-1 student visa, there are some important rules you need to follow:

Approved School – The college or university you want to attend must be approved by SEVP Immigration & Customs Enforcement.

Full-Time Student – You must be enrolled as a full-time student while your classes are in session.

English Skills – You need to meet the English language proficiency score required by your school or take courses to improve your English.

Enough Money – You must show that you have enough money to pay for your studies and living expenses in the US.

Valid Passport – Your passport must be valid for at least six months after your program ends.

Home Country Residence – You must have a home in your country to go back to after you finish your degree.

Before you apply for an F-1 visa, first get accepted by a school approved by SEVP and receive your I-20 form.
